Art Book: November

Tuesday, January 19th, 2010

As an attempt to make the wishlist of books I have seem more doable, I’m letting myself buy an art book every month. Here’s what I bought in November:

Serious Drawings by Marc Johns

It’s basically a lovely big collection of previous posted drawings – but everything is much nicer to look at in print.

gemma correll

I bought a couple of things from the wonderful Gemma Correll‘s etsy shop a while ago.  The “not tonight dear, I’m making a zine” print (see here) is probably my favourite thing right now and the zine is full of lots of talented people.

She also included a drawing  she did from a photo of me as a child – and I love it!  Now to buy some frames and find some more wall space..

couldbe.me

“Could be me” is a project exploring possibility of one artist occupying another’s space. It is a visual adventure and an interpretation of the same sentence by different artists worldwide .

Could Be Me. I think I’ll be looking through this site (along with a lot of the contributing illustrators’ personal websites) for quite some time.

Images above by Alison Richards, Andy J Miller, Annika Bäckström, and Annika Koski. As you can see, I’m not even out of the As yet.

Thursday Theme: girls

Friday, August 8th, 2008

Every Thursday I will now be posting a collection of images I’ve come across and like based on a particular theme (theme suggestions are very welcome, by the way!). I know it’s not technically Thursday any more, but I blame my site being down earlier for that.

This week’s theme: girls. More specifically, illustrated ones. I’ve noticed most drawing of people I’ve been loving lately have been females. I’m not sure that’s because I have personal presence towards images of pretty ladies or if there really is a huge difference in genders artists like to draw. Hm.

1. Sour Grapes, 2. Be-Fri, 3. sleeping ebil, 4. maicen, 5. first class, 6. Rude Again, 7. first idea, 8. y bebía té…, 9. jencorace, 10. Untitled, 11. coffee and cigarettes., 12. Pink Worlds and White Icing, 13. alice

New Blood

Thursday, July 3rd, 2008

Last week I went and had a look round D&AD’s New Blood show. Here’s a few examples of work I enjoyed (and actually managed to find portfolios of online!)

Lovely animation by Emma Fitzgerald.

Alasdair Boyce. (His website isn’t online yet but for now he has some work up at his universities degree show website here.)

Collage work by Liv Bargman.

These are the only photos I took while I was there before feeling too self conscious, and I’m really glad I took them. I love these stitched illustrations by Gemma Frearson.

Brighton Graphic Design & Illustration Degree Show

Thursday, June 19th, 2008

I went to see Brighton Uni’s graphic design and illustration courses degree show a couple of weeks ago and was so impressed. Here are a few of my favourite graduates work.

aimee holmes

Aimee Holmes – I really wish her website was currently online! She had all her illustrations in decorative frames above a dressing table covered in pretty objects. Love her style and use of small amounts of colour.

emily wallis

Emily Wallis – the detail in her work is amazing, I think you have to see it in person to really do it justice.

adam ellison

Adam Ellison

ciara phelan

Ciara Phelan – This idea is great, a screenprinted t-shirt which purposely fades if you wash it at 40 degrees to get you to hand wash.
